From rags to riches – transforming a bungalow.
Originally, a full refurbishment and extension project, this became a 5 bedroom new build, a short walk from Croyde beach.
The brief was to extend the two bedroom 1970’s bungalow sideways and upwards to provide a contemporary four bedroom house. A series of cubes with a variety of finishes and colours defines this high impact solution for chic, modern living, set in a designated ‘area of outstanding natural beauty’. The application sailed through planning, and later featured in House Beautiful, Ideal Homes and Real Homes.
By using a structural insulated panel (SIP) system, the primary shell of the house was manufactured in a factory under controlled conditions, away from the extremes of coastal weather, and rapidly assembled on site. External finishes, including render, timber cladding and stone cladding, were then applied.

“Without doubt, the relationship and trust built whilst working on a project as important as your home is essential, and I truly wouldn’t ever look anywhere else for architectural services.
“We had previously worked with Volker on an extension in our previous home. Our shared vision made him an obvious choice when looking for a trusted partner for the new house we were planning.
“Volker has a speciality for contemporary design, working closely with us to maximise the use of the plot and taking into consideration the flow of the home and our family needs.
“Volker really took the time to understand our brief, taking on board any thoughts and ideas we may have, often developing them and adding a ‘touch of magic’ which really make the project exciting.”
